In 2018, the British Red Cross launched a family charity subscription package called Little Heroes. Parents of 3 to 7 year olds sign up with a monthly donation and then get activities sent to them in the post every few weeks. Everything is designed to keep children and families active, healthy and happy.
British Red Cross had already developed the names and ideas for the project through a series of prototypes, rough-and-ready creative concepts and user testing run by Good Innovation. They needed our help to spruce everything up to pilot-ready stage, so that the product could be launched to the general public.
One of the biggest challenges was the logo – it needed to be simple, clear and fun (and bold enough to be recognised by a 3 year old!) We opted for a very legible typeface with rounded rather than sharp edges.
Another key consideration was the four hero characters (Captain Kindness, Patience Pal, Gratitude Giant, and Funny Bunny). We partnered up with Michael Arnold at George Grace Represents for the illustration, ensuring a diversity across their appearances and giving each their own primary colour. Each character was drawn in a number of poses, allowing us to use them all on print and web designs in various sizes and layouts.
These core assets were then combined in the design of a website landing page and the ‘Welcome Pack’ – which included a wall chart, large and small activity cards, and a 20-page-long story book!
“Working with Back to Front was fun, easy and exciting. They were able to take our roughly designed product and turn it into a fully illustrated dream! It was amazing to see our idea come to life with their help.”
Molli Edwards, Fundraising Innovation Officer at British Red Cross
